The Cost of Employment
Jun 19, 2023I’m about to share the biggest perspective shift that helped me realize I was the only thing holding me back…
I was working at the premier sports medicine facility in my town, a job I am grateful for to this day, and I had this epiphany… Every time I walk through these doors, it’s costing me $150 per HOUR
But that’s not how employment works, right? You’re supposed to go to work and MAKE money…
Well, yes, that’s true, I was getting paid... But by accepting this employment arrangement, I was sacrificing my potential to generate revenue on my own.
Now I didn’t have to acquire my own patients, I didn’t have to “sell,” I didn’t have to pay rent… but those are all trade-offs of employment (in most cases).
So take the $50/hour I was making as an employee and the sacrifice of time for the $200/hour sessions I could be selling on my own. I’m no mathematician, but $200 is more than $50, this is a “cost” of $150 per hour AND the time needed to make my hourly wage…
Even if I only worked 2 hours on my own, I could make what I’d accumulate in almost a 10-hour day! Not so risky anymore…
So what was missing as I kept putting off my dreams was really just my trust in myself… It was fear of failure… perception of risk... Not realizing the risk was staying where I was.
In my many calls with PTs who are flirting with the idea of leaving the safety and security of the clinic, I realized these are the exact same things that hold them back, and I can promise I know what that’s like because I’ve been there before… you’re not alone.
So how can you start to reframe the way you see the risk? The way you see opportunity?
What if you started swapping the words all together?
Take “What’s the risk if I leave the clinic?” to “What’s the opportunity if I leave the clinic?”
“What's the financial risk?” OR “What’s the financial opportunity?”
And maybe that’s tough for you... Maybe you saw your parents struggle… maybe you’ve already struggled… maybe you tried once before and failed.
But failure is expected. No entrepreneur has taken the leap to get to where they are without experiencing failure. So instead of removing failure from the equation by staying safe, embrace it. Learn from it. Grow from it. My best lessons have always been born out of failure, not success.
So what do you think? How much longer are you going to pass on your opportunity to bet on yourself since the alternative seems too risky?
In reality, an opportunity awaits.
