The Hard Truth About Success: Law of the Mirror
Feb 13, 2025
Heads up: this blog might make you uncomfortable.
It might make you stare right into the mirror and feel frustrated when you realize the only thing standing between you and the life you want… is your willingness to change.
This is the Law of the Mirror, a concept by John Maxwell, which bluntly states, “you attract what you are”
But first, a quick personal story.
Back in December, I was telling myself a story about how “nobody signs up for coaching and consulting” in the holiday seasons.
Ironically–and little did I know–I was projecting my own indecision when I faced investing in myself around this time of year.
A coach I had been following online for some time opened up his enrollment window at the beginning of December, and I inquired about the opportunity to work with him. He sent me all the details, I confirmed I was a good fit to join his program, and yet there I sat with indecision and excuses.
I started telling myself all the stories around how this was a bad time to invest and why I should wait until his next open period, and in all honesty, when I felt myself thinking about this, I became frustrated.
This isn’t who I want to be.
Why?
→ Because I was given an opportunity to act, and I was hesitant. (I’m human too.)
So I had to look in the mirror.
I had to tell myself that I wasn’t going to be the buyer who used holidays as a reason not to grow my business and get the support I wanted.
I had to recognize my pattern of resistance and consciously change it.
When faced with a repeating behavior pattern you have 2 choices:
→ repeat cycle
→ change.
That's it.
Later that day, I paid in full. I acted as both the person I want to be, and thus, the person I want to attract.
I’ve recognized this throughout my years of personal and professional growth, and I share this with you not as a way to convince you to work with me (you’ll have to make that decision yourself), but so that you can understand how the Law of the Mirror is either helping you or hurting you.
Maybe you’ve recognized this in your business:
- You have a hard time convincing your clients to pay a premium for your services, but you’re also always searching for a cheaper option.
-
You always expect discounts, so you always give them.
-
You tell yourself you can’t afford it, and somehow neither can your clients.
-
You get clients that keep saying they are going to work with you, but you yourself have put off investing the time to achieve a certain project or task.
This is the hardest realization… you attract what you are.
Now I’m not judging. I used to be there too (just 2 months ago most recently!) I’m constantly thinking about this concept and who I want to become. It’s hard work to evolve, but certainly always possible.
The first step is recognizing what belief is holding you back, and then making an active decision to become someone different.
Maybe this newsletter is exactly what you needed to make that change. Maybe it turns you off from my style. Either way, it’s done its job.
When you look in the mirror, who do you see?
A reflection of who you want to attract? Or someone who would frustrate you?
