Understand the exercise spectrum
Jul 16, 2024It’s not uncommon for PT’s to give away massive value in the form of Home Exercise Programs.
But what if those programs could generate you $200-300 in recurring revenue per month?
Would you change your view on giving this offer away?
Occasionally, one of the most difficult parts of implementation is simply changing your mindset about how a portion of your practice style has been formed over time, but remember, those rules were made up… and made-up rules can be changed.
Part of the reason for this is simply how we view these exercise types in the grand scheme of the rehab process.
Here’s a breakdown of the exercise spectrum as we view it and how to start differentiating your HEP from a PEP (Prescriptive Exercise Program):
- Home Exercise Program - Low dose and low level of exercise typically given at the initial evaluation/assessment. This is usually repeated daily with a fairly generic rep scheme for a set period of time. Changes happen ONLY at sessions where time is exchanged. It can be progressed over time, but usually is body weight oriented or lighter loads.
- Therapeutic Exercise - The clinical term for exercise management to build strength, increase range of motion, and resolve client issues. This is reimbursable by insurance but must be performed at the visit under clinical supervision.
- Prescriptive Exercise Program - Programmed based on objective data gathered from an assessment that resembles closely to traditional strength or reconditioning (return to activity) work on the client's own time. With your guidance, but not direct in-person supervision, changes happen dynamically BETWEEN sessions. This is a cash-based service.
- Fitness/Performance Programming - Whether remote or in-person this term is related to fitness programming including strength and conditioning.
So many people I talk to are doing the Prescriptive Exercises Program work but giving it away as a home exercise program! Please STOP! You’re giving away so MUCH value for free, it’s time to start charging!
It’s time to reshape the rules and take back control of how your business operates. If you want to explore a more efficient way to generate revenue, one that DOES NOT require a direct trade for time OR reliance on in-person sessions, start doing some research on our Performance Provider Growth Model.
